Long lunches in Lima

Writer: Sam CoxSam Cox

A return to civilization afforded the chance for a return to my true calling - indulging. For Lima is rightly considered one of the world's great powerhouses of gastronomy and is home to the world's "best" restaurant, Central. We were determined to experience some of this food scene, and while we opted not to attempt the "challenging" menu (so the reviews from the common people suggest) at Central, we entered the same food wonderland that houses it in order to visit its sister restaurant upstairs, Kjolle (16th on the list this year). We also took in lunch at the trendy and upcoming Merito (55th), and farewelled Rhys at the restaurant that started it all (and where a lot of these new wave chefs trained), Astrid Y Gastón. Each was a unique and incredible experience, and Lima certainly lived up to its "foodie heaven" reputation. Each and every meal we had, from the 15 course degustations to the humblest of ceviches, was absolutely delicious (and always accompanied with a pisco sour!).

When not eating, we took in some history and learned about the three pre-Incan civilizations that have inhabited the area in the last 2000 years, explored the world's second largest catacombs under the old town, wandered trendy suburbs for truly excellent coffee, and watched the sun set over the Pacific. A relaxed five nights here meant we were in no rush and could enjoy a bit of down time, and also provided an opportunity to get some washing done and stock up for the weeks ahead, where the Andes and new, guinea pig related gastronomic delights await!
